Bioaccumulation of Selected Heavy Metals in Water, Sediment and Blue Crab (Callinectes amnicola) from Bodo Creek, Niger Delta, Nigeria

A study was conducted on the bioaccumulation of some selected Heavy metals (Fe, Pb, and Cd) in Callinectes amnicola from Bodo creek in Niger Delta, Nigeria. The study was aimed at determining the concentration of the selected heavy metals in the legs, carapace, muscle and gill of the crab (Callinectes amnicola), water and sediment in Bodo creek. The study was carried out at three different sampling stations in Bodo creek from the month of November 2014 - January 2015. Crabs of different sizes, sediments and water collected from the three sampling stations were analysed using an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). Some physiochemical parameters such as temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, total dissolved solids, and conductivity of the studied site was examined in-situ. The results obtained indicated that the values of Fe, Cd, and Pb in the sediments, water, crab and certain physicochemical parameters (except pH) recorded higher levels above the World Health Organization (WHO) permissible limits in aquatic environment. Therefore, it was recommended that the studied site (Bodo Creek) should be cleaned and water treated as crab or other aquatic organisms may be hazardous to the consumers.
