Juvenile Recurrent Parotitis: A Case Report

Gascón-Rubio MC, Vereas-Martínez A and Ubis-Rodríguez E

Chronic Recurrent Parotitis or Juvenile Recurrent Parotitis (JRP) is an uncommon clinical condition that causes episodes of recurrent inflammation of the parotid gland, usually unilaterally. It affects children between 3 and 6 years of age and resolves spontaneously at puberty. Fever and general discomfort occasionally accompany it. In the periods between attacks, the patient is asymptomatic. Its prevalence is higher among men and, even its unknown etiology, it is related to autoimmune phenomena.

The true extent of this disease lies in the destruction of parenchyma that is caused by recurrent episodes. This reduces the functionality of the gland 50% to 80%.

Treatment options go from conservative treatments with anti-inflammatories, analgesic and antibiotics to invasive surgical treatments.

The aim of this article is to address the diagnosis and treatment of this rare disease from a case we deal with in our hospital.
